Where is Gorilla Habituation Done? – Rushaga Sector

The trek can last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the movement of the gorillas. Once located, you are allowed to spend up to four full hours with the gorilla family—watching them feed, interact, and move freely through the forest.

You may see young gorillas playfully climbing trees, mothers nursing their infants, and the dominant silverback maintaining order within the group. The extra time allows you to observe complex behaviors and social structures that are often missed during standard treks.

Gorilla Habituation Permits and Availability

The Gorilla Habituation Experience permit costs USD 1,500 per person (as of current UWA rates). This fee includes four hours of interaction time, ranger guidance, and conservation support.

Permits are very limited, with only four visitors allowed per day to join the habituation team. It’s therefore essential to book well in advance through a licensed tour operator or the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Gorilla habituation in Rushaga is available year-round, but the best times to visit are during the dry seasons—from June to September and December to February—when the forest trails are less slippery, and trekking conditions are more comfortable.
