Location: The Nkuringo Ridge – A View from the Clouds

Perched 2,100 meters above sea level, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge occupies a spectacular ridge on the southern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The views sweep across lush valleys, terraced farmlands, and the distant volcanoes shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC.

Its position gives guests direct access to the Nkuringo trailhead, the starting point for trekking the Nkuringo Gorilla Family  one of Bwindi’s most famous and well-habituated groups. This close proximity allows early starts and easy logistics; ensuring guests enjoy the best possible gorilla trekking experience.

Reaching the lodge is part of the adventure: you can drive from Kisoro (1.5 hours) or arrive by air via Kisoro Airstrip from Entebbe or Kajjansi, followed by a scenic road transfer winding through Uganda’s highland countryside.

Experiences: Beyond Gorilla Trekking

  1. Gorilla Trekking

The main attraction is undoubtedly the mountain gorillas of Bwindi. From Nkuringo trailhead, guests can trek to meet the Nkuringo family or the Christmas group both habituated for tourism. Guided by expert Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you’ll spend up to an hour observing these magnificent primates in their natural environment — a profound, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

  1. Nature Walks & Birding

Explore Bwindi’s diverse ecosystems on guided forest walks teeming with butterflies, orchids, and over 350 bird species, including the rare African green broadbill.

  1. Cultural Encounters

Visit the nearby Nkuringo Community Conservation and Development Foundation (NCCDF) projects to meet local artisans, farmers, and storytellers. Guests can also experience the traditions of the Batwa pygmies, the forest’s original inhabitants, through authentic cultural tours arranged by the lodge.

  1. Wellness & Relaxation

After your trek, unwind with a deep-tissue massage, relax by the fire in the lounge, or simply sip Ugandan coffee on your private terrace as clouds drift through the valley below.

Responsible Tourism & Community Partnerships

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge is a pioneer in community-based conservation. From its inception, the lodge has worked hand in hand with local residents to create tangible benefits from tourism.

A portion of each guest’s stay supports education, health, and livelihood projects in the Nkuringo area. Many of the lodge’s staff come directly from neighboring villages, and local farmers supply fresh produce for the kitchen.

The lodge’s founders also established the Nkuringo Walking Safaris initiative connecting travelers to authentic cultural and nature trails across southwestern Uganda. This integrated model ensures that protecting gorillas and supporting people go hand in hand.
